I have been to the Perla in Trussville a few times but eventually tried this new location recently. I have to say that after reading so many bad reviews my experience was different and actually was very good. I had the Filete Relleno Which was a grill fish with different seafood on top and topped with melted cheese. Now this is mostly a seafood restaurant so it is recommended to try the seafood instead of their Mexican grill menu. When we were first seated, we received a tostada with Marlin ceviche and their very spicy Habanero sauce to add, so beware on this sauce. I actually really liked the marlin ceviche and decided to order a small plate of it for everyone to enjoy as an appetizer but we eventually received our plates and did not really get to eat it as appetizers. Everybody else enjoyed what they had which was the Piña Perla, shrimp cocktail and shrimp/octopus ceviche. We had their aguas frescas that come in a xbig cup and they were pretty tasty.
So don't stay away from bad reviews if you are interested you should at least try it for yourself. -

Not much of a lunch crowd on the day I went.
I chose the Filete de Pescado from the lunch menu.
Complimentary chips and salsa arrived quickly. Chips were fresh and salsa was mild to medium.
The grilled fish had a nice crisp to the outside and was very flaky. Rice was like a pilaf but not much flavor. Salad was little more than a pile of lettuce with 2 thick tomato slices no dressing. While the fish was very good, everything else was pretty disappointing.
Service was also less than desired. I had to ask for sweetener for my unsweetened ice tea and wanted longer than expected for the check especially considering the light crowd.
I will give it another try before scratching from my lunch rotation but more likely to go with the traditional mexican menu than the coastal region inspired menu. -

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food in Birmingham this is the best place!! The menu is very extensive and has everything from seafood to burgers. There is a small language barrier with some of the servers but this lets you know how authentic this restaurant is. There are two separate kitchens, one for seafood and the other for the usual Mexican dishes. We ordered mostly seafood dishes. When trying a new Mexican restaurant I try the chips and salsa first and if they are good, then I know the rest of the food will be good. The shrimp ceviche tostados were delicious, the seafood soup while expensive ($55) was very good and filling, the whole fried fish was my favorite! Give this place a try and have desert at the homemade ice cream place on the other side of the shopping center.

This was a celebration for a birthday. Great parking available. I was unaware this place was even there. It has been so many things before. The best part about this place is the atmosphere! Karaoke night was great fun! There is plenty of space for groups and all the fun. The crab legs were the best entree! They gave you a lot for your money but they were seasoned really great! It was a busy night so service was alittle more difficult to get than normal I would assume. I also found the drink selection somewhat pricey. The margaritas were 5.00 but everything else was off the charts so don't get to wild at the bar. Overall though the atmosphere and the kind staff make up for any shortcomings. Fun night.

The only thing worse than the service was the karaoke. We went on Friday night, and it was pretty busy, but wow. My wife, and friend ordered dinner at the same time as everyone else, but she and her friend got their food 30 minutes after everyone else in our group. This was not an anomaly.
Order your drink (beer included) about 30-45 minutes before you need it.
Food, when it finally came, was fine. Just fine.
Listen, I'm not a mean guy, but I just can't even, you know? I'm writing this while my wife eats her dinner and I'm wait for my next beer, and listen to somebody butcher "No Doubt." Extremely memorable. At least the margarita was strong.
